Biography (by Dany Ouellet)

Colectivo : For Mexicans it's a jam-packed bus that awaits you beneath the burning sun. Even if you feel like a sardine in a noisy can , it's always nice to come on board and hitch a ride. Most of the time it even takes you to where you are going. A distinctive union of people sharing the same level of passion and values ; Colectivo is a ripe collective of diverse musicians who inspire team spirit and unity. Colectivo is a musical movement inscribed in a logic which reflect an open mind that only a few lucid musicians benefit from. The coherent message which is evident through their music is that no matter what the outcome is there is always hope. These fun-loving rebels share openly what they possess: to create remarkable and awe inspiring music. The essence of Colectivo is meant to project unification, spreading the word of social equality without frontiers or barriers to our youth. They are the symbol of a new musical and social revolution which is rising in the province of Quebec, one which reflects innovation , pacifism , partisan and encourages the free spirit in all of us to come forward . Thirteen musicians migrating from ten different musical backgrounds which include members from some of Montreal's creme alternative scene (Overbass, Grimskunk, Redcore, The Funkophones, Barf and many more). How did this musical baggage of Colectivo's players evolve in such a natural way giving us vibrant sensual rhythms and diversified melodies? It still boggles the mind.

On stage live, Colectivo is a true fiesta for the spectators. The shows are layered with percussive, multi-coloured and energetic rhythms which tantalize your eyes, ears and feet, blending this 13 member band (sometimes there are 15-17 depending on the night), into one unified sound on stage. The infectious vocal stylings of Shantal Arroyo and Blacky entice you for an eventful evening of hot Latin dancing! The audience always begs, wails and sweats for more!

It seems there is an underlying complex and mystical power driving all this, or it may be the Jamaica Rastaman's well known enchanting formula; that once active, you feel the craving to dance as long as you can before the moon dissipates.

Since the release of their debut album in 2000 entitled "Hasta la fiesta...Siempre", Colectivo's eclectic recidivism has given birth to a second mature album, but non-the less dynamic or sizzling. "ESPECIAL", is the result of all the musicians working together towards a common goal . Their musical identity is clearly significant, the beats are exciting; representing the particular lively personality of the band members. This well-balanced 12-piece album reflects creative variety having no two songs sound alike. As for the text arrangements, vocals, the disciplined work of Cristobal Tapia De Veer & Fermin Muguruza have infused their own special spices to the mix and are the chefs of this exceptional recipe.

So take a festive trip with Colectivo and allow for their euphoric rhythms to wash through your soul and move your feet. A five star trip with Colectivo is: ESPECIAL!

Raicilla's wedding (by Dany Ouellet)

Under the heavy Mexican sun a stranger was walking for several hours through the dirt clouds. No cars had past in days along the old dusty road . The stranger new that if he did not soon find a way to get to the famous village the Jamaican Rasta told him about, he never will he be able to take advantage of the well known formula.

A strange whisper in his ear got his attention. He looked back and at first he didn't see anything other then a cloud of dust away in the distance. Little by little the growing cloud brought another sound to he’s ears. It was tam-tams playing a rhythm-jamming along side of a brass section. He was now able to see a double decker bus approaching in the distance. Completely beaten up, the Mexicans call it “Colectivo”.

The bus stopped next to him. The music stopped and the doors opened and they let him in. The driver was rather young and did not look like nothing you would expect of a Colectivo driver. On entering the bus, the stranger taking his time, thanked the bus driver for stopping . It seemed strange to the bus driver that the stranger had no baggage. As well, he was quite pale for a person who was supposed to have been outside and under the midday sun for some time.

Joe, him self, new something about it. He was on the road for days now, stopping only at the x's marked on a map by the guide. Their road was in red on the map. Anyways there was but one road to take, and it was not very likely they could get lost. The pale man took 2 or 3 steps up and faced the rest of the passengers.

Everyone on the bus was in a good mood, with one look he could tell they must have been by 16 or 17. At the end of the bus there was a little table made up of 4 corona cases allowing 4 or 5 of the passengers to play card and pass the time. The musicians warmly welcomed him with a salute, and he in turn thanked them for allowing him a board.

A young, pretty, and dark haired woman asked him what his name was and where he was going. He told her his name was Pedrito and that his is going to the village beyond the horizon where Raicilla was getting married, and that it was a gathering that would mostlikly last several of days.

Behind this story destiny wast work. A funny coincidence for the musicians who were going to the same party. They where invited by El Presidente him self, the father of the Bride.

Colectivo was there name and they where touring for 3 months. There trip was long and fare from over, so after some time they grew silent and settled back to monotone rhythm of the truck engine. Pedrito was seated next to the girl whit the rough voice.

Lost in his mind from the very beginning he kept on repeating the same words.
“You got to have faith in the power
The power that you need
That will get you through, what ever you do
In order to succeed“
and then he started to fall a sleep.

The festivity’s organisation was at its peek. La China was making a carpet of roses leading to Raicilla’s altar. While working on the carpet, she remembered the moon was full tonight, it reminded her how much she liked dancing under the full moon…If only that witch didn’t come and suck all of our men...their thoughts where broken up by the arrival of a happy crew invading the ceremonial room with all kinds of different instruments and strange boxes. Finally the musicians have arrived…

They positioned them self’s and began to get ready for the celebrations which were starting soon. There presence was welcomed by the villagers who adored partying and worshipped music above all. They even met the Bride who came to great them and made sure the band wasen't in need of anything. He said Julio was his name, He told them he met Raicilla two months ago when he his arrived previously, and that she was El Presidente’s daughter.

Ever since then, she had stolen his heart, he couldn’t possibly imagine living without her. And so he married her. The musicians where having a drink whith him and then took a break to eat and get ready. Nobody had seen Pedrito since they got there. As soon as they got off the bus, he blended in with the surroundings…It was expected for the musicians to begin the evening.

Afterwards they proceeded with the wedding ceremony and the musicians came back for the second part of the performance.

The nightfall was followed with a clear sky, and announced the beginning of the festivities. Within the first notes being played, they all new it will be a night to remember. The excitement was high the band was in a top shape. The collective’s compositions where so nice and worm that no one could resist to jiggle to the rhythm’s they were composing. Pedrito was the only one not dancing. A strange ritual was preoccupying him. Next to him was an old and ugly woman called La Bruja. His ritual making was almost over. He was going to get what he needed, and soon he can commence the rite.

He took the refined powder from the mix of ingredients his accumulated during the past months and combined it whit a fine tobacco given to him by a friend of his, a Shamen. And so he started to smoke, at first nothing happened.

The musicians stopped playing allowing time for the wedding to take place, the mood was an electrifying one and all where overwhelmed by a vivid energy. The moon was full and round. Soon to be husband and wife, they exchange the rings and kissed each other in front of their friends and guests.

While the crowd was wishing all the best to the newly wed La China was spreading around the colourful petals on. Not noticing the big hole starting to form in the middle of the moon. The guests made this event a well-celebrated one and the musicians went back to their respectable places.

Pedrito was already at his 6th or 7th-moon puff, more then half of it was gone. Some of the guests begin to become aware of the large hole in the moon; she was now shaped like a beagle. The more the moon was disappearing the more the musicians could feel the rhythms tremble through them, half the night had passed and the trance was totally happening. Completely restless, the crowd danced until they ran out of breath. By the time the moon entirely vanished the musicians had achieved a frantic rhythm. The band appeared to be at the limit of there Strength, and everyone was asking for the tremendous finally of their act. A dark drape came down before all of there eyes and everyone collapsed.

At there awakening, the musicians didn't find a trace of anyone. The village looked like it’s been abandoned for years now. The only probe they had of there adventure was a check signed by El president given to them the night before.

Troubled by the strange happening, they headed back on the road not knowing what to think. Night fall never came in the village beyond the horizon. As a mater of fact the rumours are no one has ever seen the moon since.

P.S.: The characters in this story are real, only the places and the events where not changed.
